This is a three year full time programme meant for training secondary school teachers in all arts subjects. It is designed for fresh students who have completed advanced level studies and also upgrading secondary education diploma holders. The secondary school sector in Uganda and the greater East African region is rapidly expanding. As a result, there is growing need for well trained and disciplined secondary school teachers of arts subjects. This programme addresses that need by producing teachers with the required up to date knowledge, skills and attitudes or values, and can hence offer better teaching services.
A Level with at least two principle passes obtained at the same sitting, or; a diploma in secondary education. The student should have, at A-level studied one of the following subjects: Geography, History, Economics, Divinity, Fine Art, Literature in English, Luganda, Kiswahili, Computer Education and Entrepreneurship. Regular UCU requirements also apply.
The programme runs for a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of five.
This program is intended to enable teacher trainees:
Acquire knowledge and instructional skills in teaching in secondary schools
Design electronic and non-electronic teaching and learning materials,
Acquire knowledge and skills of conducting guidance and counselling
Critically examine the curriculum design, development, implementation and evaluation.
Acquire knowledge and skills of managing learners from different social and economic background and those with different learning abilities
Distinguish between management and leadership
Upon completion of this program teacher trainees should be able to:
Apply theories in education to contextualize the teaching and learning strategies for holistic development of learners.
Apply knowledge about children’s learning styles and potential to stimulate every students learning.
Interpret, design, implement and evaluating curricular for all levels of education.
Use electric and non- electronic teaching, learning resources to enhance effective learning in different settings and conditions.
Create favorable learning environment to facilitate learners with diverse background solve their social, psychological and intellectual challenges.
